Keeping up with the Hatmakers {2012 Version)

If you are a regular reader (thank you!) you might remember back in 2011 when I started a Travel Journal. Since we are on the road so much, I thought it would be fun to document where we stay, where we ate, and just how long we were gone.

Take a moment and look back at our 2011 in review of Keeping up with the Hatmakers so you will be ready to compare and contrast the numbers in 2012. I was quite surprised by the numbers in 2011. Not sure why - I was gone for all of them, but its really different when you see EXACTLY what the it says. The numbers don't lie! Neither does my dry cleaning bill. :)

drum roll please........
Geesh!

2012 Totals:
Nights in hotel: 130
Hotels: 49
Restaurants: 251
This did not include any meals that were furnished to us by sales, owners, state associations, or friends who felt sorry for us eating out all the time.

After I added up all the numbers I thought I would look back in 2012 and see what were the highlights and some of the reasons our numbers jumped so much!

1. As usual, the National Western and the North American add a lot of nights and meals to the list.
2. We went on a real vacation during the summer and then took a Christmas vacation to Vegas. It's good to focus on a little downtime!
3. We ate at some good places in 2012!
  • Seagar's in Destin, FL
  • Spencer's Steakhouse in Omaha, NE
  • All Vegas Restaurants!
  • Texas de Brazeil in Denver, CO
  • McCormick & Schmidts in Columbus, OH
  • Smith & Wollensky's in Columbus, OH
  • Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater, OK
  • Deken Kemme's barn party (food provided by Julie Kemme)
4. Attended Crystal Young's Wedding in Iowa (www.crystalcattle.blogspot.com)
5. Attended Christy Collin's Marketing Seminar in Stillwater
6. Dove more into our photo and video business HImaging.

Boy as I look back 2012 was a great year! I look forward to trying to top that in 2013! Like I said in my blogpost about 2011, if you travel a lot a travel journal is really fun. It is a great keepsake and a great way to look back at what you've been up to!

Whirl of a weekend

No pun intended

From earlier posts you know that Drew and I were in Florida last week for his Adjuster's School work conference. He was working, I was vacationing. We had a wonderful trip until the day we were to depart, and head home for the Kentucky Beef Expo and Drew's birthday. Friday was the day Kentucky was suppose to get some serious severe weather. I am terrified of severe weather and the talk of it all on the weather channel was seriously freaking me out. I was in Florida and my family, friends, and Gabby Mae were in Kentucky dodging storms. Let's just say, I was a mess.

This didn't make for a great day of flying. My nerves were shot. Luckily and thankfully, both of our families in Kentucky and Tennessee were not harmed in the storms. Our first flight leaving Florida was bumpy, but we arrived in Atlanta on time. We headed to get some dinner and margarita (again, nerves = shot) during our layover. While we were in Atlanta the weather got nasty there, and as we were waiting for our plane to board there was a tornado warning in Atlanta. Again, thankfully our plane did board. We left about an hour later than scheduled, and a flight that should have taken 50 minutes too 2 hours. We arrived in Louisville just in time to wish Drew a happy birthday. Hello 1 am!

We did make it in for the Kentucky Beef Expo sale day though. Which was very helpful since we manage the Simmental sale and assist with the Shorthorn sale. We hit the ground running. Literally. Finally, after all sales were over, we were able to go celebrate the best day - Drew's birthday!

Drew had requested we go to the Cheesecake Factory, but the wait was long. Instead we opted for El Nopal next to the hotel for some good Mexican and margaritas. See a trend this weekend? I know I have told him a million times, but Happy Birthday to my love! Lauren and I did surprise him though with a trip to the Cheesecake Factory to get birthday dessert after dinner!

We stuck around on Sunday to watch a bit of the show at the Kentucky Beef Expo. Though we were very happy to come home to a town spared by the destruction and our home in one piece. Some people in Kentucky were not that lucky though. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers over the next few weeks as they rebuild.

That was an eventful weekend we had. I'll take the very, calm boring ones from now on please!

This morning we woke up to 4 inches of snow! Happy Monday!

Best Thing I've Ever Ate

Food Network has nothing on us.

Due to our line of business and traveling frequently, we eat out A LOT. Sometimes its to the same ole places that are everywhere, but we (Drew and I) always try to make sure that we take in some place that is local or not a large chain. Gives you some variety, keeps it interesting, and is very good for our travel journal.

This week we are in Destin, Florida one of Drew's work conferences. The hotel sits directly on the beach and our room faces the ocean. As I type this I am sitting on the balcony watching the waves. Rough, huh?

We arrived Tuesday afternoon and after some ocean watching and chill time, we decided it was time to get some dinner. I had researched the hotel before we came and knew that they had a very nice steak and seafood restaurant in the hotel called Seagar's. There are only two of these restaurants in the United States; the other is in Alexandria, Virginia. I suggested we take it in it, and after making a reservation for later in the evening, we headed downstairs.

We were seated at our booth overlooking the restaurant with its dim lighting and baby grand piano. Our waiter Paul came and took our drink order then alerted us that the Captain would be over shortly to tell us about the menu. The captain comes shortly thereafter and thoroughly explains our options. They serve prime cuts of beef and all of their seafood is either local or flown in daily. Yes, you have my attention.

After a few minutes looking over the menu we decide to start our evening with the Creole Barbeque Shrimp. Delicious! Three shrimp served in a house made BBQ sauce with corn fritters. You could tell that the big, plump shrimp were fresh. I was worried it might be spicy, but it was not at all.

Onto the entrees. I chose to go with a Filet and Crab Cake duo and Drew chose the Jumbo Lump Crab Louisiana. We try to never order the same thing so that you can share with each other. I did share a bit of my steak with him, but just a bite because it was so good! We also ordered a side of Creamed Spinach (one of Drew's favorites), but we brought most of it back to the room because we were too engrossed with our entrees.

My steak was phenomenal. I have ate steak at many different places such as Ruth Chris and Morton's, but this steak takes the cake. It was flavorful, juicy, and succulent. It was 10 ounces, much larger than I usually order, so I brought some back for lunch. It was just as good the next day. My crab cake was full of jumbo lump crab meat. Combining the two into one bite was awesome!

I wish I had of video tapped Drew explaining how wonderful his meal was last night. It would easily rival any of of the Food Network's chefs describing food. His crab meat was served on top of saffron scented rice. I know that saffron is fancy, expensive, and in the movie No Reservations. It was served with baby bok choy, grilled onions, and mango. I tried it and it was delicious. Wouldn't trade it for my steak, but he loved it so thats all that matters.

Then comes the time when you are so incredibly full, but its time for desert. Paul told us about the many options including Peaches Foster and Chocolate Souffle. We settled on the New York Style Cheesecake brought in from the Carnegie Deli in NYC in a to go box. It was delicious on Wednesday when we finally ate it. So good, we got carryout cheesecake Wednesday night.

Oh, I almost forgot about the fabulous fresh breads! Paul told us he was going to bring us some bread. He brings a huge bread basket to the table where we could choose what we wanted. We took one of each. Hey, you have to try them all out! Our selection included french, multi-grain, onion loaf, and raisin bread. Those we served with a homemade Italian salted butter, which you could have eat by itself.

Wow - we found like piggies. Oh well, don't judge.

Keeping up with the Hatmaker's

Drew & Holli take EVERYWHERE!

Sometimes with our travel schedule along with some of the people we have a chance to work with, I really do think we should have our own reality show. Gabby would be the star, of course.

Last year, I started to keep a "Hatmaker Travel Journal" to keep up with all the places (both good and bad) that we stay at, eat at, and whats yummy. I purchased a pack of craft journals for a wedding day present for Drew, but still had some left over. I thought this would be a great use of the other journals, plus I could draw and make them colorful.

During the busy parts of sale season, I did get behind a bit. Luckily, I have a pretty good memory and was able to recall many of the places we went to eat and what we ate. Though when we are in Louisville at the North American it isn't hard to remember how many times we eat at the Outback because its right beside our hotel.

So at the beginning of 2012 I sat down to total up our travels. Though I knew it was going to be a lot, I guess I was kind of surprised at the final numbers.

2011 Totals!
Nights in hotel: 101
This didn't include nights when we stopped at say Drew's parents to stay
Hotels: 42
Restaurants: 155
Half of which were Outback -> just kidding

The 2012 Hatmaker Travel Journal is up and running with a few entries already scribed in it. If you travel a lot, I highly suggest you do this. It was fun to look back and see where we had been. Plus it is a keepsake for many years.

Happy Traveling!

Where in the world are the Hatmaker's??

Because sometimes we have to ask ourselves...

Growing up, I always felt very fortunate than when my friends at school were here at home, I had the opportunity to travel all over the United States showing cattle and going to sales. Luckily, I married a man who loves to travel like I do and likes my family's business.

After a crazy busy 2010 with sales and wedding stuff, we thought of the idea of keeping a travel journal. We saw one of the cooks on the Food Network keeps a journal about places they eat and what they have. Not only food, but we wandered how many nights in 2010 were spent in a hotel room.

Therefore, for 2011 Drew and I decided to keep a travel journal. It is nothing fancy. It is a craft book I got when I was making Drew's wedding present. I decorated it myself and the pages are all blank inside, which I will fill with our travels. It will include all of our trips, restaurants visited, what we ate, and the hotels we have stayed in. I am really excited about this, and think it will be a great piece of our history and memories to have for years to come.

So far, we have Nashville for New Years, the National Western Stock Show, and a upscale little restaurant we tried out here in Paris.

So here's to all the wonderful places and people we have the opportunity to visit with in 2011!!
